Through the Years | Angela Lang Piedmont Family Photographer

One of great joys of being in business for over a decade is that I get to photograph families over many years. In 2001 when the eldest daughter was a baby, her parents brought her to me for her first photo session, and as their family grew they kept coming back — this is their fifth session.

It is an honor to be chosen as a family’s photographer to document and capture them throughout the years. I feel lucky and blessed to get to do what I do.

Professor Ken Kobre | Angela Lang Bay Area Portrait Photographer

“People come into your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. When you figure out which one it is, you will know what to do for each person.”

Today’s blog post is for Ken Kobre, the Photojournalism professor at San Francisco State University who is the best instructor I’ve ever had. After seven inspiring, and sometimes grueling photography and journalism classes with him I graduated and we became friends. I’ve always admired Ken’s ability to engage and challenge students to do their absolute best. He set the bar high for excellence and students had the choice to meet that standard or repeat the class. This fueled me every semester and was good training for my future photography career.

Ken lives what he teaches. He and his lovely wife, Betsy Brill are a dynamic duo — he continues to author and she edits the widest-selling text book on Photojournalism in the world (“Photojournalism: The Professionals’ Approach”), and he’s also the inventor of Professor Kobre’s Lightscoop. His new documentary on Associated Press photographers will be aired soon.

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to take Ken’s portrait.

I loved photographing this family. Shayna is 8 months-old and even though she was teething you’d never know it by all the smiles she gave us. When parents bring sentimental items to the session it can really add a personal touch – her parents brought a bath towel and I added a vintage wash bowel to complete the fun look. It doesn’t get any cuter than a beautiful happy baby with 2 bottom teeth showing!

What a sweet bundle of energy Brooke was with bursts of running mingled with climbing and then off she’d go sprinting again. I’m glad I had a GU before the shoot!

Blake was a bit more subdued on this day — after all, he’s six now and has been around the playground a few times as well as a full-page photo of him in Professional Photographer magazine in February 2010.

I love photographing children with their home and yard as a sentimental backdrop, and I get to capture them in their own environment. For Brooke and Blake, that meant climbing in their favorite tree.

Sophia’s parents brought their sweet 14-day old to my studio a few days ago for her first portraits. Most newborns eventually fall asleep but I think little Sophia didn’t want to miss anything which meant that I could photograph her amazing eyes. There’s something so endearing about a newborn’s wrinkly skin and soft head covered with brand new strands of hair. I love everything about these little miracles.

Mother’s Day Photos | Angela Lang Tulip Grove Photographer

This is my fourth photo event at The Tulip Grove in Montclair Village and each time is an experience of meeting and photographing new faces and some familiar faces as well. Most recently I photographed mothers and children together in celebration of motherhood, and captured the love between them. This one held an extra special place in my heart because mothers are the ones who are usually behind the camera, but rarely photographed. My own mom sent this quote to me via Facebook and I think it sums up being a mommy perfectly:

“To all the unselfish moms out there who traded sleep for dark circles, salon haircuts for a ponytail, long showers for quick ones, late nights for early mornings, and designer bags for diaper bags, and wouldn’t change a thing. Let’s see how many moms post this who don’t care what they gave up and instead LOVE what they got in return.”
